Beyond The Impact Factor, What Gives?

One of the most common comment I have heard from my fellow academics is:

“You should only focus on research papers, and target top journals. Other forms of writings don’t serve much purpose. They don’t get cited, they don’t add to your impact factor and they don’t count during your performance appraisal,” all that, and to add to that, my own thought “unless you are paid for it?”

Paid or not, I have yet to ponder upon it seriously, frankly. I do not think my writing is at there yet. You know, there… Instead, it is the simple thought of writing a decent 1000-word (or somewhat) post of what originally was, say 10,000 words. Wouldn’t that make it a lot more accessible (and also, readable?) to a whole lot of people? Plus, many of the articles are behind a paywall, and that’s unfortunate. Can one and should one put a price on knowledge?

So here I go. In the weeks that follow, I may be putting up blogposts of my published articles along with some others on various topics that piqued my interest. I probably won’t be consistent. I am enjoying my break from those harsh deadlines.
